According
to the Ministry of Communications, India has used AI-based tools to disconnect
1.77 crore mobile lines linked to fake or forgery documents. This move is
part of a larger effort to secure the network. It also involves blocking 45
lakh spoofed calls made by international callers using an advanced system that
was developed in collaboration between telecom service providers and the
Department of Telecommunications.
A
centralised system to block spoof calls is coming soon
Two
phases are being used to implement the new system of the DoT. First, the
DoT targets telecom service providers to prevent calls being spoofed using
their subscribers' numbers. In the second stage, a centralized system will
block spoofed phone calls that use numbers from other TSPs. The Ministry
of Communications has confirmed that a second phase will be launched soon,
further tightening the security measures in all telecom networks.
1,77
Crore connections disconnected, thousands of devices blocked
In
an effort to crack down on cybercrime in India, the government disconnected
33.48 lakh connections and 49.930 mobile phones used by cybercriminals at
hotspots. In addition, 77.61 million mobile connections exceeding the
limit prescribed for each individual user were disconnected. 2.29 lakh phones
that were involved in fraud activities were also blocked.
DoT
has also tracked 12,02 lakh of the 21,03 lakh mobile phones reported as lost or
stolen. Over 11 lakh accounts associated with these fake connections were
frozen by payment wallets and banks.
In
an effort to combat fraudulent SIM card sales, the Ministry blacklisted 71,000
Points of Sale (SIM agents). In addition, 365 First Information Reports
have been filed in multiple states and union territory.
Over
11 lakh WhatsApp accounts that were linked to fake documents or forged ones
have also been disconnected. The government has taken action against
entities that send malicious SMSs. It has disconnected about 20,000 entities
and 32,000 headers of SMSs. In addition, 2 lakh templates for SMSs have been
blocked.
These
initiatives highlight India's growing reliance on AI to secure its telecom network
and crackdown on cybercrime. The DoT's next phase in its efforts to
eliminate spoofed phone calls will further strengthen the country's defenses
against telecom fraud
